A MOVIE WITH A MESSAGE
I had the pleasure of being able to view the movie, “WOODLAWN,” before it hit movie theaters last Friday. This was by far one of the most inspiring, touching and exhilarating films I’ve seen in 2015. If you are a football fan you will love this movie, if you are a Christian you will love this movie, if you just need to be inspired you will love this movie…YOU WILL JUST LOVE THIS MOVIE! From Pure Flix (GOD’S NOT DEAD, DO YOU BELIEVE?), Roma Downey and Mark Burnett (THE BIBLE, SON OF GOD) and the Erwin Brothers (MOM’S NIGHT OUT, OCTOBER BABY) comes WOODLAWN, a high school football drama and a remarkable true story that happened in the early 1970s in Birmingham, Alabama when racism and hate ran rapid. This movie shows us that when a spiritual awakening takes place love and forgiveness replaces hate and anger. It reminds you that when people bond in love and the unity of Christ they can overcome any obstacles, hate simply does not stand a chance. Something we all need to reminded of in this day and age.
The movie centers around the Woodlawn football team players who are struggling not only on the football field, but with one another. Until one day at football camp when they are introduced to Hank, a sports chaplain who ends up practically converting the whole football team into accepting Christ. This spiritual awakening has a ripple effect that is beautiful to watch as you see barriers being broken, respect growing, and sportsmanship at it’s finest. At the heart of the movie is Tony Nathan (Caleb Castille) a black star running back who’s humble nature is absolutely endearing to watch. As the two rivaling teams get ready to battle at the packed stadium of 42,000 fans you realize just how significant this moment in time was to a city who had been ravaged by racism and hate. This is a Christian film about hope and faith, but anyone can relate to this storyline because it crosses all divides. I was blown away by this film and it will definitely be in my movie library. If there is one movie you see this year, WOODLAWN should be the one! Take a look at the trailer and plan to see it soon!
